Seeing, Peeping, and Scrying an Installation by Ma Li
February 7 - March 7, 2015 RECEPTION Saturday February 7, from 7-10pm Peephole Gallery
Alter Space is excited to announce our newest Peephole Gallery exhibition, Seeing, Peeping, and Scrying, an installation by Ma Li. This exhibition reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in the deliberate act of looking, both socially and privately. Through a series of light sculptures and a dance installation mimicking the format of a peepshow, Ma Li transforms the gallery space into an illuminated dreamlike world. The artist draws a parallel between scrying, a practice of looking into translucent/reflective materials for a spiritual vision, and peeping, a private act set inside a mundane and intimate environment. The work blurs the boundaries between the quotidian and the mystical by encouraging new perspectives of looking.
Everything Blooming under the Blue Moon
2015 plexi-glass, wire, feather, beads, jewelry, plastic, and light features
Everything Blooming under the Blue Moon is to describe the atmosphere of Hua Hao Yue Yua, a Chinese idiom that translates to blooming flowers and full moon. It has connotation as the blossoming of beautiful life. Chinese culture often use Hua Hao Yue Yua to congratulate newly wed couples, marrying the image of being together under the full moon and blooming flowers. Happening only once every couple years, a blue moon is an extra full moon of the year. This piece depicts a moment of a city growing and flourishing, with buildings, trees, flowers, a bird, and a path leading to a sacred site for ceremony--all under the blue moon.
